ESSEX CRYSTALL was likely introduced to Europe from Belgium. In England, between 1858 and 1860, the jeweler and innovator Thomas Cook employed this technique. Cameo crystals were sold in London to Hancock’s jewelry store, which commissioned court artist William Essex to paint intaglios with colored enamel. The name ESSEX CRYSTALL originates from him.
William Essex is renowned for painting miniature portraits of Queen Victoria in colored enamel, highly prized by the Queen herself. What is ESSEX CRYSTALL? It is a crystal of pure natural rock crystal featuring a three-dimensional image carved using the intaglio technique. Unlike classic intaglios, the carving is on the front surface, not the back. It is also covered with multi-colored enamel, adding color to the image. These ESSEX CRYSTALLs were mainly framed in 12K and 14K gold and set with diamonds.
